ChompChomp - Singapore's Best Hawker Centre in My Heart

I've been going there for as long as I remember. As the hawkers gained fame for their varied and tasty dishes, the name, "Chomp Chomp" became an appropriate onomatopoeia, reflecting the sound of frenzied eating.

A lot of dinners were spent there eating with my family (we live just 10mins away) - BBQ Stingray (A MUST eat item), Wanton Mee, Hokkien Mee, Satay, BBQ Chicken wings, Fish porridge, Seafood soup, Rojak, Jumbo-size sugarcane juice are what we usually order. ChompChomp is the best hawker centre not only because of those fond childhood memories, but also because it seems that all the food is nice there!!

However, be prepared to wait a while for a table during peak hours. And, all the stalls are so packed together that it is inevitable that you leave the place smelling like ChompChomp!! This doesn't deter me from making my obligatory visit(s) to this place whenever I'm back in Singapore, and I will usually go there with JY from 22H00 onwards when it is less crowded and the weather being much cooler and pleasant for eating a late dinner/supper. The both of us will walk back to my place after satisfying our tummies for a late night movie or just girls' talk in my bedroom. =)

Hawker Centres are one of the greatest inventions of Singapore - where delicious food are available and accessible to all in the society.

This is where we sat the other time - right inside, at the back of ChompChomp. In the background, you can see the drink stall with freshly chopped sugar cane sticks packed into metallic buckets.

JY & her sugarcane drink.

This isn't the jumbo-size, because I don't feel like drinking it that night. Jumbo size would be a good size to share among 2 people.

At most ChompChomp stalls, you place your order and pay later when the food comes to your table.
Make sure you get your cash ready because the stall helpers are always rushing everywhere around the place due to the crowd.

What we ordered during one of our nights there.

BBQ Stingray in Sambal Chilli.

Lala shellfish - some kind of clams in spicy sauce.

Rojak - Asian's fruit and vegetable salad.

Fruit rojak consists typically of cucumber, pineapple, benkoang (jicama), bean sprouts, taupok (puffy, deep-fried tofu) and youtiao (cut-up Chinese-style fritters).

In Singapore & Malaysia, the term "rojak" is also used as a colloquial expression for an eclectic mix, in particular as a word describing the multi-ethnic character of Malaysian and Singaporean society.

Satay.

Satay may consist of diced or sliced chicken, goat, mutton, beef or pork. This is very similar to what French refer to as, "brochette".  Turmeric is a necessary ingredient used to marinate satay, which gives the dish its characteristic yellow colour. In Singapore, Satay is served with a spicy peanut sauce dip, or peanut gravy, slivers of onions and cucumbers, and ketupat (rice cakes).

 Hokkien Mee.

Chomp Chomp Food Centre

[HOW TO GET THERE]
The easiest way I can think of if you are travelling via public transport would be to get to Serangoon MRT Station (NE12/CC13), North-East & Circle Lines and take Bus #315 from the underground bus interchange. #315 brings you right in front of ChompChomp.

If all else fails, take a taxi. ChompChomp is so famous in Singapore that every taxi driver should know how to get there!! =)
